Skin Care

1. Consistent Sunscreen Use:

  • Broad-spectrum protection: Use a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are the primary cause of premature aging.

  • SPF 30 or higher: Opt for a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays.

  • Daily application: Apply sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days, as UV rays can penetrate clouds.

  • Liberal application: Use a generous amount to cover all exposed skin. Adults typically need about 25ml to cover their body.

  • Reapplication: Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

2. Seek Shade:

  • Limit sun exposure, especially during peak hours when UV rays are strongest. This is generally between 10 am and 4 pm (11 am to 3 pm in the UK from March to October).

  • Utilise shade from trees, umbrellas, or other shelters.

3. Wear Protective Clothing:

  • Long sleeves and pants: Cover as much skin as possible with tightly woven fabrics. Darker colors and thicker fabrics offer more protection.

  • Wide-brimmed hats: Wear hats that shade your face, ears, and neck.

  • UV-protective sunglasses: Choose sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays to protect your eyes and the skin around them. Look for labels indicating 100% UV protection or UV400.

4. Avoid Sunbeds for Tanning:

  • Skip tanning beds: Tanning beds emit harmful UV rays that accelerate skin aging and increase the risk of skin cancer.

  • Use self-tanners: If you desire a tanned look, opt for self-tanning products instead of sun exposure. Remember to still use sunscreen with self-tanners as they don't provide sun protection.

5. Be Extra Cautious:

  • Near reflective surfaces: Be aware that water, snow, sand, and concrete reflect UV rays, increasing your exposure.

  • During certain times of the year: UV radiation can be high even on cool or slightly cloudy days.

6. Other Important Tips:

  • Moisturise: Use a daily moisturiser to help keep skin hydrated, which can contribute to a more youthful appearance.

  • Gentle skincare: Avoid scrubbing your skin harshly, as irritation can accelerate skin aging.

  • Healthy lifestyle: Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, stay hydrated, get enough sleep, and avoid smoking, all of which contribute to overall skin health.

By consistently implementing these sun safety tips, you can significantly reduce your risk of premature skin aging and maintain healthier, younger-looking skin for longer.

Flourish Tip:

As a mother of two, I always have emergency suncream- in my car and most of my bags. LEGOLAND Windsor provide SPF 30+ around the park in dispensers similar to hand soap/ sanitiser dispensers. This is genious and I think there should be funding for local parks to do the same.
