My Story

My name is Ellie Foster, I am a qualified physician associate working within NHS Primary Care and I am committed to providing lifestyle medicine with care.

Over the past few years, it has become increasingly evident how limited access to support is.

Medical appointments within General Practice are limited due to a higher demand than availability, and when you finally are able to secure an appointment, there is understandably a time limit. This can be unhelpful and create barriers to care in multiple areas of your health. Most appointments are limited to one problem per visit. This does not provide an opportunity to explore your overall health, nor provide a holistic approach to overall wellbeing. Whilst Lifestyle Medicine services do not provide advice for specific conditions, nor any specific treatments, my aim is to address your lifestyle and help you to understand your own wellbeing more clearly. This is what defines lifestyle medicine; there are no simple 'fixes' or short term changes, this is an ongoing change in lifestyle which will result in a positive shift in your life.

I Want to Be Clear

Important Note: Lifestyle interventions are complementary to traditional medicine and should not be considered a substitute.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulates healthcare services in England. Our services focus on holistic lifestyle support and education, which falls outside the scope of CQC registration. The CQC has confirmed this directly.

Here's a breakdown of the key differences between lifestyle medicine and traditional medicine:

Focus:

  • Lifestyle Medicine: Focuses on preventing and living with chronic diseases through changes in lifestyle behaviors. These behaviors include healthy eating, physical activity, stress management, sleep hygiene, social connection, and avoiding risky substances like tobacco.

  • Traditional Medicine: Focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases using a variety of methods including medications, surgery, and other interventions.

Approach:

  • Lifestyle Medicine: Emphasises patient empowerment and self-management of health. It provides tools and resources to help individuals make sustainable changes to their lifestyle.

  • Traditional Medicine: Often takes a more doctor-centered approach, with the doctor diagnosing and prescribing treatment options. This is not provided by Flourish and any medical concerns or questions will be signposted back to your own clinician.

Scope:

  • Lifestyle Medicine: Primarily can be beneficial for overall well-being and preventing future health problems.

  • Traditional Medicine: Addresses a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. It can include everything from treating a common cold to performing complex surgeries.

Overlap:

  • While they differ in approach, lifestyle medicine and traditional medicine can work together. For example, a doctor may recommend lifestyle changes alongside medication to manage a chronic condition. Lifestyle medicine focuses on the principles of living a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Traditional Medicine manages, diagnoses and treats illnesses and conditions, this is where my services at Flourish are not appropriate and I do not offer this service outside of my role as a Physician Associate in NHS General Practice. To learn more about the Physician Associate role, please see this link.

Here's an analogy to help understand the difference:

  • Imagine your health as a house. Traditional medicine is like the fire department that comes in to put out a fire (treat an illness). Lifestyle medicine is like preventative measures you take to ensure your house is less likely to catch fire in the first place (healthy habits).

In summary:

  • Lifestyle medicine focuses on preventing and managing wellbeing through lifestyle changes.

  • Traditional medicine focuses on diagnosing and treating all types of diseases with various interventions.

  • Both approaches can work together for optimal health outcomes, but lifestyle medicine is not a substitute for traditional medicine.
